Success Story
Last year, Poland witnessed a unique event when the second “China Town” Weiqi Cup took place. This tournament not only continued its mission of promoting and teaching this fascinating strategic and tactical game, but also attracted significantly more participants than its first predecessor. Compared to the first “China Town” Weiqi Cup in 2014, the number of participants increased by a whopping 37%. 2022 brought 80 participants, which was a significant step in the development of the Go community in Poland.
International influence
However, that is not all. The “China Town”Weiqi Cup in 2023 is even more international – almost 200 players from over 22 countries have already signed up to participate in this year’s tournament. Of these, 7 are professional Go players from the European Go Federation, which underlines the prestige and importance of this event in the European Weiqi scene. The tournament has been awarded the Grand Prix class of the European Go Federation, thanks to which professional players will receive points and a place to participate in the fight for the title of the European Grand Prix Final 2023 in London on December 28.
Increase in the Prize Pool
In addition, this year's edition of the tournament attracts the attention of players not only due to its reputation, but also thanks to the spectacular increase in the prize pool. Thanks to the generosity of the Sponsor, the Chinese Restaurant Network China Town in Warsaw, which has been operating since 1997, the prize pool is now as much as EUR 10,000. This is a spectacular increase compared to EUR 2,000 last year.
